How GlobalTestMarket and Online Market Research Works

October 26th, 2007

1-5 ChartGlobalTestMarket is a website where anyone who likes voicing their opinion about anything can join, take online surveys, and directly contribute to the development of new products, services and technology. We try to keep everything simple, but there’s a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that you probably don’t know about…

GlobalTestMarket has been around for years and has established itself in the top ten of online paid survey sites around the world. We pay out nearly $5 million USD annually to members who take surveys, but what you may not know that the surveys – and the money – don’t just come out of nowhere.

GMI, the company that runs GlobalTestMarket, works with many of the top market research firms in the world (and lots of smaller ones, too). We do not control which questions go into the online surveys – our clients do. In turn, we work closely with them to create surveys that are fair, pay a reasonable amount to our members and are applicable to a specific audience. Specifically, this is how a project might work:

  1. A company will come to us and say, “We need 1,000 women living in France who own dogs and drive German cars.”
  2. We will help them program their online survey and set an appropriate value of the survey (paid out in MarketPoints to members).
  3. We send the online survey out to members who match their criteria (have marked they are female, live in France, own a dog and drive a German car).
  4. Sometimes, if the demographic is hard to reach or we don’t have all of the necessary information (we may know which members are female, live in France and own a dog, but might not know if those members have recently purchased a German car), we may contact additional members who meet some of the criteria.
  5. The online survey will contain additional questions to make sure members match the criteria. If they don’t, they will be screened out and redirected to GlobalTestMarket.
  6. Members complete the online survey and are paid MarketPoints, which are redeemable for cash (in this case, the members would most likely receive Euros as they are living in France).
  7. GMI/GlobalTestMarket compiles the data and provides the company the tools to analyze the data and make business decisions based on the market research you helped provide.

There’s even more to it than that, but that’s the process in a broad sense. So if you’re not receiving as many online paid surveys as you’d like, make sure you keep your profiling surveys up to date so we can properly target you in the future.

I don’t understand why it takes so long to receive payment. GMI should be honest
with it’s members. Getting a check from GMI takes 6-8 weeks. I have seen my check dated on the 20th of a month but not mailed till the 27th. Why hold the checks for a week? Is anyone else frustrated by this process?

    Michael,

Normally, GlobalTestMarket redemptions are delivered within 4 to 6 weeks for members in the United States. You should recall that I handled your matter personally. Redemptions for late August and September were severally delayed due to human error involving in database. The error was corrected, and it is my understanding the individual is no longer with the company.

Every redemption requested during that period took an additional 2 or more weeks to deliver. Redemptions made during October are being delivered within 4 to 6 weeks and no further issues have occurred.

    Stephen,

According to our records you received over 5 survey invites for the month of October. GlobalTestMarket does not control how many invites a member will receive in a given month. Our clients create the market research studies and instruct which demographics are to receive a survey invite. Some months you might receive more than 5 invites, and some months perhaps less. It really depends upon the demands of our research clients.

I have questions about the integrity of this service. There have been surveys presented and after 10 minutes of taking the survey, told that I did not qualify, after providing all the information they requested.

    Gene,

Have you contacted our customer service about a specific survey? You can reach them by using the web form here Customer Support. Provide them with as much information as possible. I suggest the following:

    Survey/Study #
Your Account # or Email address

Also, retain the email invite in case they need to review the survey landing page link or email header code.

My department has created standard operating procedures for awarding MarketPoints based upon length of time to complete the survey. We do not always provide just 5 MarketPoints for a screen out and 50 for a complete. The point value is supposed to vary depending upon time or amount of questions for each phase of the survey. If survey programmers or account managers are not following those guidelines we need to know, so we can correct their practices. I hope this helps.

My question is how much money can you make off a single survey that is 1/2 hour or an hour? Alot of paid survey programs are saying you can make $25 to $50 per survey. would that be accurate?

    Mr. Dubert,

We send out satisfaction surveys to a random sample of our membership every 4 to 6 months. One of the questions asks how GlobalTestMarket compares to other surveys companies as to the survey complete payout. Approximately, 75% state GlobalTestMarket pays more than the competition.

A typical MarketPoint award for a 30 minute survey is 50 MarketPoints. You need to accrue 1,000 MarketPoints before you can redeem. One thousand MarketPoints can be exchanged for $50.00 in US currency.

Some clients will increase the MarketPoint award depending on many factors: hard to reach demographics, deadline for the research, survey subject matter and more.

Clients have held online focus groups with GlobalTestMarket members. Focus groups tend to range from 35 minutes to 90 minutes. The MarketPoint award for attending a focus group is substantially larger. I have seen focus group awards range from 500 MarketPoints to 2,000 MarketPoints. Focus groups are rare.

Make sure you do your research when joining any research group promising to pay you $25 to $50 for 30 minutes of participation. Make sure they belong to industry associations, and independent dispute resolution groups like the Better Business Bureau. Be cautious about who you are giving personal information to on the Internet.

    Hope that helps.

Instead of mailing the check, why don’t you start directly crediting to user bank accounts!!

  12. Garth O'Brien says:
    September 30th, 2008 at 7:22 am

    Tushant,

That would require our company store your bank account information. Unfortunately, this is not feasible. The insurance costs for our company would sky rocket. Storing bank account information is an extremely risky option in the eyes of insurance companies. That is why we will have to rely upon other solutions such as PayPal.

Hi Garth, I’d like to know if in Spain the banks pay the complete amount of the check or if it’s better to receive the payment through (for instance) Western Union or similar. If the banks retain a commission…, we’ll work for them…

What do you think?
